Theft doesn’t happen when you’re watching. It happens at 2am when the DVR is 720p, blurry, and the guard is on the other side. Storage is not TB — it’s days at bitrate. H.265 4K at 15fps = 4Mbps, 30 days 24/7 for 32 cams = 42.8TB usable → 48TB + NAS. H.264 would be 64TB. Frame rate matters: 7fps saves 53% storage but misses running. We spec 15fps, motion adds 30% saving, NAS second copy for theft of NVR. When DCI asks for 14-day export, you export — not ‘DVR overwrote after 7 days’. That’s the difference between evidence and apology.
PoE is not ‘plug and play’ at 1.8km. 100m limit means switches every 90m, fibre between, UPS per switch (2h), and voltage drop calc (48V → 44V at 90m, still >37V). Labelled, tested (0 packet loss, 1ms), and documented. Old DVR had 9V at camera (12V source, 180m 0.5mm²) — IR failed at night, image black. We power correct, we test, we document. 01 — Survey & Design — Lens, Storage, PoE on Paper Before Ladder
Lens: 2.8mm 110° for 5m width at 3m height (detect 25PPM), 4mm 79° for 11m (recognize 60PPM), 6mm 53° for 16m (observe 40PPM). We calculate PPM (pixels per meter) — 60PPM to recognize face, 40PPM to detect motion, 120PPM to read plate. 4K gives 2× PPM of 1080p. In Nairobi, PTZ 25× at gate reads plate at 35m (120PPM) day and 25m night (IR 100m). Don’t guess — calculate.
Storage: 32× 4K H.265 15fps 4Mbps = 43TB for 30 days 24/7 → 48TB NVR + 48TB NAS. Motion detect saves ~30% if 10h motion/day, but we size for 24/7 so overwrite never surprises.
