The Wrong Boot Costs More Than the Boot

Toe Protection: Steel vs Composite vs Alloy

All three pass 200J impact (EN ISO 20345), but behave differently on Kenyan sites.

Our take: For mixed sites, standardize on composite (e.g., Composite Toe Hiker). Workers walk 12k steps/day — 400g saved per pair is 4.8 tonnes lifted per year per worker.

Sole & Midsole: Where Cheap Boots Fail

  • Outsole: SRC is the only slip rating that tests on steel + ceramic with glycerol (oily). SRA/SRB are partial — insist on SRC. Look for deep lugs for mud (Thika) and heat-resistant (300°C) for foundries.
  • Midsole: Puncture-resistant (1100N, EN 20345) — steel or composite. Composite is warmer and doesn’t set off detectors. Essential where rebar or nails are present — which is every Kenyan construction site.
  • Heel: Shock-absorbing (20J) + arch support. Without it, fatigue at 3pm is guaranteed.
  • Field test: On delivery, we do a 10-minute walk + ladder + oil-steel test. If workers slip, we swap.

    Electrical Protection: EH vs Dielectric vs ESD

    This is where audits fail.

  • EH (ASTM F2413, 18kV, secondary): Protects against *accidental* contact with live circuits (step potential). For general industry where panels are nearby. Not for live work.
  • Dielectric (EN 50321, Class 00 500V, Class 0 1000V, Class 1 7500V): For electricians working live. Must be tested every 6 months (we do it, with certs), stored flat in bag, with leather protectors. Dielectric boots (e.g., Dielectric Safety Boots) are for substations — not general sites.
  • ESD / Anti-static (EN 20345, 0.1–1000MΩ): For electronics, explosives, flour mills. Prevents spark.
  • Mistake we fix weekly: A site buys EH boots for electricians doing live 415V — EH is not rated for that. Use dielectric.

    Comfort & Fit: The Reason Boots Are Removed

    A boot that hurts will be removed, and then it protects nothing.

  • Height: 6-inch for ankle support (most), 8-inch for scaffolding and ankle injuries.

  • Insole: Removable, washable, with arch. Replace every 6 months — sweat breaks down foam.

  • Break-in: 2–3 days of 4-hour wear. Full-day on day We schedule break-in before audit.

    Standards & Buying: How to Avoid Counterfeits

    Kenya is flooded with stamped-but-unmarked boots.

    Checklist before you pay: 1. Marking on tongue: EN ISO 20345:2011, S3/S5, CE, manufacturer, date. 2. KEBS D-mark: Batch number + import permit. Ask for it — we attach it to every delivery note. 3. Test: Flex the toe — real composite doesn’t dent with thumb. Smell glue — strong solvent = cheap bond that will delaminate in rain.
